After a trial of the 'uniform cam' in Carrickfergus the Police Service of Northern Ireland has launched the official use of a camera worn on the uniforms of police officers. The camera was used in Lisburn this week as part of the roll out programme for the new device. In their press interviews the PSNI claimed that the camera would be invaluable at crime and road traffic scenes.

It appears that Northern Ireland has now joined the 'Police Camera Action' society and it would also appear that you nor I can do anything about it. The new camera recording system is so one sided that you can be recorded without your permission, although reports suggest that police must first inform you that they are recording you. It is scandalize that you can now be compelled to stop by the police and recorded without your consent, even though you may have done nothing wrong, you may even be the victim of the crime. Without cause, without arrest, without charge, without trial you could have your data recorded and retained. The big question remains what have our politicians who are charged with protecting your rights done? Apparently nothing, only Basil McCrea an Ulster Unionist on the Policing Board  was interviewed in the UTV broadcast and he backed the scheme claiming their use would only be instant specific. In a utopia this statement might be plausible, but in a society where police film unsuspecting spectators lining the route of the Belfast Twelfth Parade (above), this statement lacks credibility, as to do the politicians who believe their re-election is assured, having failed to safeguard your rights
