News: New East Belfast MLA
Following the new electoral fortunes of the Alliance Party's
Naomi Long, the party has selected Chris Lyttle as her replacement in the East Belfast Constituency.
Naomi was elected as constituency MP in May, displacing sitting MP Peter Robinson.
The new MLA Mr. Lyttle is 29 years of age, East Belfast born and raised and educated at Queen's University. Mr. Little states:
'I am looking forward to representing the constituency as part of a strong Alliance team at Stormont'
Editorial
It is encouraging that Naomi Long decided stand down as an MLA after her electoral victory. However, these elections have shown
deficiencies in our electoral system, for the replacements to DUP and Alliance Party MLA's who have stood down following their general elections victories, have not be elected by the public or constituencies they represent. As such a change in the law is required,
democracy can not be denied at any stage, in the political development of such a troubled land. The public at every stage have the right to chose an individual to represent them.
