Belfast
News: Such A Waste of Money? No
doubt if you have braved the recent harsh
winds, falling temperatures and flooded
roads to get into Belfast City Centre, you
will have noticed to very large husk like
masts standing proudly on Donegall Place.
These
are just the first two of eight masts to
be erected as part of the 'Streets Ahead'
project, which has left our once beautiful
city centre, looking more akin to that of
a third world city.
'Streets
Ahead' is estimated to cost the tax payer
a staggering £28 million and although we
do not know the separate cost of these
masts, Simply Belfast question why public
servants have felt free to 'squander' our
money, given our current economic
position, given the poor desperately in
need across Northern Ireland, given the
elderly that will again die this year due
to lack of money and given that our
neighbour has just had to be bailed out by
Europe, to offset financial ruin, is it
wise?
It
would appear that those who currently hold
public office and positions across our
public sector, have little or no
comprehension of the public mood and have
little or no sympathy with those in great
need across our province.
These
masts are claimed to be inspired by our
maritime past and are to be named after
famous Belfast vessels, such as, Titanic,
Olympic, Oceanic, Britannic, Laurentic,
Celtic, Nomadic and Traffic. Northern
Ireland has always had a proud maritime
past but we question why on one hand our
agents appear to waste public money with impunity,
whilst on the other they allow maritime heritage
such as Gustav Wolff's cottage, to be
demolished, without consequence.
As we
enter another hash winter, as frost bites
and temperatures become bitter, remember
that when you see elderly people dying
from lack of heat or lack of food or when
you see friends, family or neighbours
struggle, desperate to make ends meet,
remember, you can look at these 16.2
metre, 3.5 ton, giant tusks littering our
city. Perhaps they will inspire you, come
the 2011 Assembly Elections, to vote out
those, who pay for feel good trinkets,
while those they are charged to help, go
unaided.
