Sir Hugh Orde's Wins Libel Damages

Sir Hugh Orde former Chief Constable of the PSNI has won libel damages over false newspaper allegations published in May 2007 by the Sunday World, that he spent public money to fly his son to the United States, when he traveled there for St. Patrick's Day celebrations.

Although the amount of the settlement is undisclosed the northern editor of the Sunday World Jim McDowell said: "The amount of damages was a modest five figure sum that was agreed by both sides." As part of the settlement Sir Hugh's legal costs were paid and an apology extended by Sunday Newspapers Ltd, acknowledging that there was absolutely no dishonesty or impropriety on the part of Sir Hugh Orde in relation to any aspect of his expenses in his position as Chief Constable of PSNI.

Sir Hugh Orde, now president of the Association of Chief Police Officers is reported to be very satisfied with the complete and categoric vindication of his reputation.
